It doesn’t matter how many light bulbs you currently have in your house – I have three boxes of the damn things – it is a truth universally acknowledged that you haven’t got one to fit that light that just blew. And if, by some miracle, you do have one that fits the socket, the chances are it won’t be the right wattage. Or it may be written in lumens. Perhaps it’s an LED (light emitting diode) rather than an incandescent tungsten bulb. In which case you need to look at the number of kelvins to get the right atmosphere.

Hunting through boxes over the weekend after the light in the 17yo's bedroom blew, I realised I'm not even sure what half of the bulbs mean any more. I was basically just picking out anything with the right fitting.
