What smart tech can actually do for your home
The second part of my series on home technology looks at what will actually improve your life. (Hint: it's not all speakers and TVs - but convenience and safety.)
We’ve all seen those films where the hero(ine) comes home and faffs about in the dark for 10 minutes, getting a glass of water, hanging up a coat, kicking off his/her shoes etc - all BEFORE PUTTING THE LIGHT ON.
Now we also know (thanks to the incidental music) that there’s either an attacker waiting or, if it’s a comedy that is borrowing the horror trope, the neighbour or a cute dog will appear (cue massive exhale). Or, possibly, if it’s a thriller trying to build tension before the thrilling denouement, a cat/mouse/bird will fly out of a cupboard scaring the bejesus out of character and audience alike. At which point they finally give in and PUT THE BLOODY LIGHT ON.
But what we know most of all is that real people, in real life, turn the light on as soon as they enter a room. It makes us feel safe. And we don’t need background music to tell us to do that.
