This is the first Xmas in years that we have had majority of family over for a pre Xmas lunch as we are going interstate for Xmas.
In five minutes or less, I wound tinsel around the staircase handrail, literally threw Santa gnome down onto the landing ( landed right side up and where intended!) and put the fairy lights on ( already on the mantel). No tree! Do you know, I don’t think anyone actually noticed!! Or maybe they did but let us off the hook. Regardless I have to say, I have enjoyed the lighter work load ! Wish I had remembered about the bathroom Xmas hand towels though! Damm ! 🙄
I don’t understand people who rid their houses of decorations before the New Year. New Year’s Eve and Day are part of the Xmas period and festivities. I always left mine up until 12th night (I don’t decorate early, about a week before Xmas Day because I’m bah humbug before that). Now that I live in France where the 12th night rule doesn’t seem to apply, I leave my decs up for at least a week longer. Mostly because by the time I’ve put the decs up, I start getting in the seasonal mood and enjoy all the twinkly lights and things. Also it’s a pain taking it all down!
I follow a number of American interior design blogs and they all decorate for the seasons! I think it’s a faff and very twee. I would never do that, bunnies and eggs for Easter, no thanks!
Thanks Kate. Always such an enjoyable read.

Hi Julie, I hope you are well. Our retreat still feels fresh in my mind. I love the idea that you just threw the Santa gnome down the landing!!
I do enjoy my Christmas kitsch for all of Dec but by the early Jan it’s feeling a bit claustrophobic.
I know exactly what you mean. I need to have everything gone before New Year so I can start afresh.
I will admit to being secretly quite pleased that someone got me a Christmassy coffee cup the other day.
