I LOVE naturalmat mattresses. I slept on one at The Scarlet Hotel in Cornwall. It was such an amazing nights sleep, once we got home we emailed the hotel to find out the brand, and then swiftly replaced our mattress and bed. Best decision ever.

my view is this: buy the firmest mattress because you can always make it softer by buying a mattress topper. but you can't make a too soft mattress harder - i learnt this the hard way

This is true and I will go into this in my next post but too hard and it bends your spine - you need to be heavy enough that your shoulder and hip can sink in a little to keep your spine in a straight line when you are lying on your side. If the mattress is too firm and you are too light your spine will bend up at neck and hip and that's uncomfortable and bad for you. A topper can help if your mattress is too hard.

Hi Kate, can you give the dimensions of your bedroom? I love the idea of the false wall. It intrigues me. How much space between the false wall & the wall with the fireplace? the space on either side of the bed? And the foot of the bed & wall? In the US, the suggested space is 36” (about 91 cm). What is the least walking space around the bed & behind the wall?

Is the false wall basically shelves & hanging space? I’m thinking tall IKEA box frames with a wood back & wall paper covering.

I'm definitely someone who leans into dark and cocooning when it comes to bedrooms, and I love your solution for the wardrobe - I love free-standing wardrobes as pieces of furniture, but in my bedroom I want the furniture to be around the same height as the bed, so I prefer the wardrobe to be elsewhere. I had a horsehair mattress growing up, and it has made me very particular about having a good firm mattress ever since.

I had a horsehair mattress too. I’ve gone the other way and I like to sink into a cloud!
